Used Car Inspection Checklist for Texas Buyers

The short answer

Before buying a used car in Texas, check for flood damage, frame damage, fluid leaks, stored or recently cleared codes, and shifting problems on a test drive. A professional pre-purchase inspection costs far less than a hidden problem.

What to check before you buy — including flood damage signs common after Gulf storms.

Why inspect before buying

A pre-purchase inspection costs a fraction of what a hidden problem can. It also gives you leverage to negotiate the price.

Exterior and frame

Look for uneven panel gaps, overspray, rust underneath, and mismatched paint that can signal past accidents.

Flood damage warning signs

Musty smells, water lines in the trunk or under carpets, rust on seat rails, and fogged lights are red flags — especially for vehicles that came from the Houston and Gulf Coast area.

Under the hood

Check fluid condition, leaks, belts, hoses, and scan for stored codes. A recently cleared code memory can hide problems.

Test drive

Listen for noises, check braking and steering, and make sure the transmission shifts smoothly both cold and warm.
