What Does It Mean When Your Car Clicks but Won't Start?

The short answer

Rapid clicking when you turn the key almost always means a weak or dead battery. A single loud click with bright dash lights usually means a failed starter or starter solenoid. Corroded battery terminals can cause either symptom.

Rapid clicks vs. a single click — what each sound tells you.

Rapid clicking

The starter solenoid engages, drops out from low voltage, then re-engages. A jump start usually confirms it's the battery.

One click, then nothing

Battery voltage is fine but the starter motor isn't turning. Starters fail from worn brushes, a bad solenoid, or heat soak.

Check the terminals

White or green crust on the terminals adds resistance. Cleaning and tightening them sometimes fixes it on the spot.

Frequently asked questions

Can a starter be replaced at home?

Yes, most starters are replaced on-site in 1–3 hours.

Will tapping the starter work?

Sometimes, temporarily. It's a sign the starter is near the end.

Is it safe to keep jump-starting?

It's a short-term fix. Find the cause before you get stranded.
