Car Won't Start? A Step-by-Step Guide

The short answer

Rapid clicking means a weak battery, a single click means a bad starter, and cranking without starting points to fuel or spark. A mobile mechanic can usually diagnose and fix all three where the car sits.

Clicking, cranking, or nothing at all — narrow down the cause before calling for help.

Stay safe first

If you're on a roadway, turn on hazard lights and move away from traffic. Your safety matters more than the car.

Rapid clicking

Rapid clicking almost always means a weak or dead battery. A jump start or battery replacement usually solves it.

Single click, no crank

A single click with good battery power often points to a failed starter or a bad connection to it.

Cranks but won't start

If the engine turns over but won't fire, the cause is usually fuel, spark, or a sensor. Check the fuel gauge first — it happens to everyone.

Nothing at all

No lights and no sounds suggests a completely dead battery or a loose/corroded terminal.
