The Texas Driver's Car Maintenance Schedule

The short answer

Texas drivers should change oil every 5,000 miles, replace air filters every 15,000–30,000 miles, service brake fluid and coolant every 30,000–60,000 miles, and test the battery and AC before every summer.

A simple mileage-based checklist tuned for heat, traffic, and long highway miles.

Every 5,000 miles

Oil and filter change, tire rotation, tire pressure check, and a quick visual inspection of belts, hoses, and wipers.

Every 15,000–30,000 miles

Engine air filter, cabin air filter, brake inspection, and battery test. In dusty areas, change air filters more often.

Every 30,000–60,000 miles

Brake fluid flush, coolant service, transmission fluid service (per manual), and spark plugs on some engines.

Before every summer

Test the battery, check the AC, inspect the cooling system, and check tire condition. Texas heat punishes all four.
