How Often Should You Replace a Serpentine Belt?

The short answer

Most serpentine belts should be replaced every 60,000–100,000 miles, or sooner if they show cracks, missing chunks, glazing, or squealing. Texas heat dries rubber out faster, so inspect the belt at every oil change.

What it drives

The serpentine belt spins the alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump, and on many engines the water pump.

Warning signs

Squealing at startup, chirping at idle, visible cracks across the ribs, or a shiny, glazed surface.

Don't forget the tensioner

A weak tensioner causes slipping and noise even on a new belt. Replace both if the tensioner is worn.

Frequently asked questions

Battery light on, steering heavy, temperature rising. Pull over soon.

Cost?

Usually $119–$399 including tensioner inspection.

How long does replacement take?

30 minutes to 1.5 hours on most vehicles.
