What Your Check Engine Light Really Means

The short answer

A steady check engine light means the engine computer stored a fault code — get it diagnosed soon. A flashing light means an active misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter — slow down and stop driving.

Steady vs. flashing, common codes, and when it's safe to keep driving.

What the light is

Your vehicle's computer monitors dozens of sensors. When a reading falls outside its expected range, it stores a diagnostic trouble code and turns on the check engine light.

Steady vs. flashing

A steady light means a fault has been detected — get it checked soon. A flashing light usually means an active engine misfire that can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter. Reduce speed and stop driving as soon as it's safe.

Most common causes

Loose gas cap, failing oxygen sensors, worn spark plugs or ignition coils, mass airflow sensor issues, vacuum leaks, and catalytic converter efficiency codes are the usual suspects.

Why a code read isn't a diagnosis

A free code read tells you which system flagged the issue, not which part failed. Proper diagnosis includes live data and pinpoint tests so you don't replace parts that weren't broken.

Texas inspection note

In emissions counties like Harris, Dallas, Travis, and Tarrant, an illuminated check engine light will fail your state inspection. Fix it before your inspection date.
