Is It Safe to Drive With a Flashing Check Engine Light?

The short answer

No. A flashing check engine light means an active engine misfire. Unburned fuel is entering the exhaust and can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter within miles. Reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and get off the road as soon as it's safe.

What a flash means

The engine computer flashes the light when misfires are severe enough to damage the catalytic converter — an expensive part, often $1,000–$2,500.

Common causes

Failed ignition coils, worn spark plugs, a clogged fuel injector, or a vacuum leak. Codes P0300–P0308 identify which cylinder.

What to do

Pull over safely, turn off the engine, and call a mobile mechanic. A misfire diagnosis and coil or plug replacement can usually be done where the car sits.

Frequently asked questions

Steady vs flashing?

Steady: get it checked soon. Flashing: stop driving.

Will it pass Texas inspection?

No — an illuminated check engine light fails the emissions test in emissions counties.

Can bad gas cause it?

Rarely. Ignition problems are far more common.
