Immediate steps
Turn off the AC, set the heater to max hot with the fan on high, and exit at the next safe spot. On I-10, I-35, I-45, or I-20, use the shoulder only if you must.
Once stopped
Turn off the engine and wait at least 30 minutes. Never open a hot radiator cap — pressurized coolant can cause severe burns.
Likely causes
Low coolant from a leak, a failed thermostat, a bad water pump, a broken serpentine belt, or a dead cooling fan.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add water?
In an emergency, yes, once the engine is cool. Replace it with proper coolant soon.
How far can I drive overheated?
Ideally zero. Even a few miles can warp the cylinder head.
