What to Do If Your Car Breaks Down on a Texas Highway

The short answer

If your car breaks down on a Texas highway, turn on hazard lights, get to the shoulder or the nearest exit, stay buckled in or move away from traffic, and call for help. Texas's Move Over or Slow Down law requires passing drivers to give you room.

Safety steps for I-10, I-35, I-45, and I-20 breakdowns.

Get out of traffic

Coast to the right shoulder or exit if possible. Turn your wheels away from the road.

Stay safe

If the shoulder is narrow, stay in the car with your seat belt on. Never stand between your car and traffic.

Get help

Call 911 if you're in a dangerous spot. TxDOT courtesy patrols operate in some metros. For repairs, call a mobile mechanic.
